Habitat destruction is the definition of going against the phrase "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."
This is a piece I created on the idea of habitat destruction. Each animal featured (Javan Rhino, Quagga, Pyrenean Ibex) have all been affected by the loss of habitat and now are extinct. These animals are still with us to serve as a reminder and incentive to create a change for their and your sake.
The current rate of deforestation is 160,000 square kilometers per year, which equates to a loss of approximately 1% of original forest habitat each year. Other forest ecosystems have suffered as much or more destruction as tropical rainforests.
But why is this happening? Forest loss and degradation is mostly caused by the expansion of agricultural land, intensive harvesting of timber, wood for fuel and other forest products, as well as overgrazing. Most of these explanations deal with consumerism.
The next time you make a purchase realize you are casting your vote. Vote for a cleaner and healthier environment by investing in companies who work with recycling or are trying to make a difference.
